There’s something magical about photographing couples at Cannon Beach. Maybe it’s the salty ocean air, the dramatic coastline, or the way Haystack Rock rises from the shoreline like something out of a dream. Add two happy dogs to the mix, and the session instantly becomes even more memorable.
On a beautiful spring evening, I met up with a sweet couple and their two energetic pups for a sunset session near Haystack Rock. The weather gorgeous that night. The couple on a vacation with their dogs were looking to create fun photo memories. Cannon Beach has a way of creating an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and adventurous, which made it the ideal backdrop for documenting their relationship.
From the moment we started walking along the shoreline, the dogs stole the show. One sprinted through the waves chasing seabirds while the other stayed close, happily soaking up attention and treats between photos. Instead of trying to force perfectly posed moments, we leaned into the natural energy of the evening. That’s often when the best photographs happen — in the in-between moments filled with laughter, movement, and genuine connection.
Haystack Rock gave us endless opportunities for beautiful scenery. As the tide rolled in, the wet sand reflected the sky and created a soft, glowing light around the couple. The clouds shifted constantly, opening just enough for golden sunlight to spill across the beach. Oregon’s coastline is unpredictable in the best way, and that evening delivered some truly cinematic views.
One of my favorite parts of photographing couples with dogs is watching how naturally everyone relaxes. Dogs bring a sense of playfulness that makes sessions feel less formal and more authentic. Whether they’re running circles around their owners or curling up beside them for a quiet moment, pets are part of the story. Including them in engagement or couples photos adds another layer of personality and meaning to the images.
Throughout the session, we explored different areas around Haystack Rock, stopping occasionally to let the dogs investigate driftwood, tide pools, and crashing waves. The couple embraced every moment, even when sandy paws ended up on jackets and windswept hair refused to cooperate. Honestly, that’s part of the beauty of beach photography. It’s real, imperfect, and full of life.
As the sun disappeared behind the horizon, the beach became quieter and softer. The final images captured everything I love about coastal sessions: movement, emotion, connection, and a sense of freedom. The couple walked hand in hand with their dogs trotting beside them while the ocean stretched endlessly in the background. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like documenting a meaningful evening together.
Cannon Beach will always be one of my favorite places for couples photography, especially for dog lovers. Between the breathtaking scenery, dramatic skies, and relaxed atmosphere, it creates the perfect setting for photos that feel timeless and true to who people are. And when you add two joyful dogs into the experience, it becomes unforgettable.
